IAHPC News Briefs

Back to Basics  Now that the IAHPC-ELNEC Palliative Care Basics course has concluded, members can access videos of all six modules. More than 300 people registered to learn about: palliative care nursing; pain management; symptom management; communication, loss, grief and bereavement; and the final hours. All offer expertise geared to global realities.

During the communication module, experts Dr. Porter Storey and Dr. Betty Ferrell were asked for useful resources. They recommend Vital Talk's online courses for clinicians; but they can be very costly. Dr. Ferrell further suggested ELNEC's interdisciplinary communication courses and said that while most ELNEC courses require payment, those who contact the organization can be approved for free access. She also suggested Oxford University Press textbooks on palliative care (i.e., Oxford textbooks of palliative medicine, nursing, and other disciplines, such as social work and psychology), which "have excellent chapters on communication in serious illness."

Research on Policies & Practices  If you haven't already checked it out, you may be interested in IAHPC's most recent issue of Literature Search on palliative care policies and practice, Barry Ashpole's compilation of current articles on the topic from different perspectives: global, high- and low-income countries, Latin America, and pediatrics.

When You Have Bad News  A notable European Association for Palliative Care blog post: "Please, don't tell my father: The dilemma of providing information when seriously ill people or their families prefer non-disclosure" presents a framework to help clinicians navigate the tension between transparency and cultural or familial preferences. It includes a clear infographic available in seven languages.

Successful Fundraising Tips That Attract Donors is an Academics Online video recommended by IAHPC's Senior Director of Advocacy and Partnerships Katherine Pettus, who emphasized the usefulness of the first speaker, Wycliffe Nyafuanga, at the 12:40 minute mark of this 1 hour, 45-minute seminar. Nyafuanga helps nongovernment organizations fundraise and is the author of NGO Start-Up and Accelerator Strategy."

Underserved Population Special Issue Palliative Medicine Reports has extended its deadline to October 1, 2025, for submissions for a thematic issue on underserved populations, including low- and middle-income countries and other low-resource contexts. Interested? Read the instructions for authors.
