Stop By & Say Hi!
Thanks to the European Association of Palliative Care for supplying IAHPC with a booth at EAPC's 18th World Congress, taking place June 15-17 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. If you are attending the congress, stop by to meet—or have a chat—with us! The booth will be staffed by Katherine Pettus, our Senior Director of Advocacy and Partnerships, and Tania Pastrana, our Research and Academic Advisor.

New to the Website: Literature Search
The IAHPC has added another feature to the website, Barry Ashpole's "Literature Search." Every six weeks or so, a new compendium of articles of interest to those working in palliative care will be uploaded in its entirety. Literature Search is the source for this newsletter's occasional Lessons from the Literature by Ashpole, called "On My Radar," where a few of the articles are selected and briefly described.
Reminder
Keep Sending Us Your Photos!
We have begun to receive some photos for the 2nd IAHPC Photo Contest, announced last month. Don't wait until the last minute! The deadline for entries is October 31, 2023. Three prizes are up for grabs: $300 USD and a two-year membership extension; $200 USD and a one-year extension, and $100 USD and a six-month extension.
Your photos are an invaluable way to show what palliative care looks like in your region or institution. Many of the photos, winning or not, are used in IAHPC documents—such as: in the monthly newsletter, to accompany stories; in our emails to members; on social media—where they are viewed by thousands of potential supporters.
To participate in the contest, find all the details in last month's News section.
Great Idea! Shim-chung-i is a program that grants wishes of hospice patients and their families. Enacted by the hospice ward at Eunpyeong St. Mary's Hospital, the Catholic University of Korea, the program "had a significant impact on the lives and happiness" of recipients. Wishes included: a last birthday party, a visit home, watching a movie with family, and reuniting with their puppy. Granting a wish involves gathering the care team for a meeting, where they make a plan to coordinate implementation of the wish.
Tidbits
A Positive Step
Katherine Pettus and Lukas Radbruch's open access article, Parallel Opioid Crises: Brakes on sustainable development?, was published on May 26 by the journal Palliative Care and Social Practice. It states that identifying the two crises, "one of access, the other of excess...is a positive step" toward realigning governance and science.
The article notes that the roots of the crises date back to the East India Company's commodification of opium in the 18th century, which led to a 20th century backlash to criminalize the trade. It states, "The evidence academic experts are generating to overcome the knowledge gaps can help the public sector overhaul anachronistic regulatory systems and build better ‘fences’ to prevent diversion and harmful non-medical use while supporting adequate access for medical purposes."
Pettus is also lead author of Pandemic Treaty Should Include Provisions for Palliative Care, published online June 1 by the Bulletin of the World Health Organization. It is co-authored by Stephen Connor, executive director of the Worldwide Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance; Julia Downing, executive director of the International Children's Palliative Care Network; and Joan Marston, an executive committee member of PallCHASE.
Spotlight on Home-Based Care
Data from Palliative Care Quality Collaborative (PCQC) surveys done on consecutive years, 2020 and 2021, have been analyzed and compiled in a free, downloadable report. Spotlight on Home-Based Care reflects data gathered from 83 palliative care programs serving more than 83,000 patients annually in the United States. It is a project realized by PCQC and the Center to Advance Palliative Care.
Free Resource Packets
CareSearch, a palliative care network based in Australia, has a bevy of freely available resources for health care professionals. It includes resources grouped into packets for specific topics, including: acute care, primary care, forms for case conferences, guides for GPs, and guides for nurses.

Global Science Award
IAHPC Board Member Natalie Greaves is part of the African Caribbean Cancer Consortium Team that has won a global science award for their work that addresses cancer and health disparities in patient populations of African descent. The American Association for Cancer Research Team Science Award, given in May, recognizes innovation and meritorious science. Dr. Greaves, a lecturer in public health at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, in Bridgetown, Barbados, expressed delight that research in the developing world is gaining momentum, and her hope that this achievement inspires future physician scientists in the region.
