A Deeper Dive…. into Europe
By Genevieve Napier
IAHPC Programs Officer
In the past three issues of the newsletter, we highlighted the geographic breakdown of IAHPC memberships in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This month, we bring you the numbers for Europe, which accounts for 11% of all members.
While each month the number of members changes, the percentages don’t vary a great deal.
Twenty-five countries in Europe have representation in the IAHPC membership. The United Kingdom accounts for 23%, followed by Spain at 12%, and Germany, Italy, and Switzerland at 7% each.
The detailed breakdown is illustrated in the chart below.
Members’ Impact
IAHPC members Marvin Delgado Guay, Yvonne Heung, and Eduardo Bruera were among eight coauthors of an article published in the June 15 issue of Cancer titled “Palliative Care Education and Research at US Cancer Centers: A national survey.” The article compares the results of surveys in 2018 and 2009 sent to all National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in the United States, and to a sampling of non-designated centers. The purpose of the survey was to determine the current state of palliative care education and research, evaluated in terms of structure, processes, and outcomes.
IAHPC member and Newsletter contributor Tania Pastrana is lead author of an article published in the BMC Palliative Care titled “Insights from a Community-Based Palliative Care Course: A qualitative study.” Member and former president of the IAHPC Eduardo Bruera is one of the coauthors. The qualitative study was to explore the experience of medical students following a palliative care course that combined classroom teaching and community-based learning. It discusses the need for medical students to be exposed to clinical palliative care encounters, and talks about how medical schools and health systems could respond to current challenges.
If you have a recently published article or other notable achievement that you wish to share with your IAHPC colleagues, please contact Genevieve Napier.
