A Deeper Dive... into North and South America
By Genevieve Napier
IAHPC Programs Officer
In the past two issues, we highlighted the geographic breakdown of IAHPC memberships in Asia and Africa. This month, we bring you the numbers for North America, which accounts for 25 percent of IAHPC members, and South America, which accounts for 12 percent.
While each month the number of members changes, the percentages don’t vary a great deal.
In North America, 69% of memberships represent members in the United States. In South America, 50% of memberships represent members in Brazil (28%) and Colombia (22%).
Next month is the last in this series, where we do a deep dive into Europe.
Members’ Impact
Eric L. Krakauer, MD, PhD, is lead author of three articles published in the June 2021 issue of JCO Global Oncology: “Cervical Cancer-Associated Suffering: Estimating the Palliative Care Needs of a Highly Vulnerable Population,” “Essential Package of Palliative Care for Women With Cervical Cancer: Responding to the Suffering of a Highly Vulnerable Population,” and “Augmented Package of Palliative Care for Women With Cervical Cancer: Responding to Refractory Suffering.” Some of the coauthors are also IAHPC members: Drs. Stephen Connor, Nahla Gafer, Quach Thanh Khanh, M.R. Rajagopal, and Dingle Spence.
The authors state that, “Women with cervical cancer, especially those with advanced disease, appear to experience suffering that is more prevalent, complex, and severe than that caused by other cancers and serious illnesses, and approximately 85% live in low- and middle-income countries where palliative care is rarely accessible.”
These articles report on the major types of cervical cancer and the prevalence, severity, and duration of suffering associated with the disease as a prerequisite to designing palliative care. The study convened a group of experienced experts in all aspects of care for women with cervical cancer, and from countries of all income levels, to create an essential package of palliative care for cervical cancer (EPPCCC), as well as an augmented EPPCCC for refractory suffering.
Lead author Dr. Luca Franchini, Dr. Silvia Varani, and Dr. Eduardo Bruera were among coauthors who published an article in the April issue of Palliative Medicine titled “Home palliative care professionals perception of challenges during the Covid-19 outbreak: A qualitative study.” The study investigates the essential role of home palliative care services during the first wave of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in Italy, seeking to better understand how home palliative care professionals were affected.
“A Virtual Coaching Workshop for a Nurse-Led Community-Based Palliative Care Team in Liberia, West Africa, to Promote Staff Well-Being During COVID-19” is an article, authored by Dr. William Rosa, published online in April in Nursing Education Perspectives. The article describes a project to improve the health of nurses affected by COVID-19. Discussions are underway to expand this educational coaching intervention in both East and West Africa.
If you have a recently published article that you wish to share with your IAHPC colleagues, please contact Genevieve Napier.
