EAPC Series on Nurses and Midwives
To mark the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, “and the benefits that nursing and midwifery bring to the health of the global population,” monthly online posts throughout 2020 to honor their work are being published on the website of the European Association for Palliative Care.
February’s topic is Palliative Care for Babies (neonates): Developing services, written by Alexandra Mancini (Smith), Pan London Lead Nurse for Neonatal Palliative Care at the Chelsea. Ms. Mancini talks about a baby, Bowen, and Bowen’s family, who inspired her to advance her visions of neonatal palliative care, including a textbook she cowrote, Neonatal Palliative Care for Nurses.
January “sets the scene” of the initiative with Nurses Are the Bridge of Healthcare: Celebrating the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020 by Dr. Julie Ling, with a background in nursing and currently CEO, European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), and Dr.Piret Paal, researcher and coordinator at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research and Education at the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg, Austria.

New Pediatric Case Discussion Forum
The Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network has launched a case discussion forum to share experience and gain knowledge in the field of pediatric palliative care. A new case will be described once every two months.
The first case, “Gut dysmotility in two-year-old girl with presumed genetic condition,” is presented by Dr. Grace Ng from HCA Hospice Care, Star PALS (Paediatric Advance Life Support). After describing the case, Dr. Ng asks the community to weigh in on two questions:
- How would you manage the patient’s worsening gut dysmotility/chronic constipation?
- Would you consider a trial of new agents that are currently used in the adult population (e.g., Prucalopride)?
