A flourishing interdisciplinary PC provider in Greece

The 2019 IAHPC Institutional Member Award Winner is a non-profit, interdisciplinary palliative care provider in Greece that began in 2010 for adults with cancer, expanded to those with ALS in 2016, and whose goal is to extend its services — all free of charge — to other patient groups with life-threatening illnesses.
This is the second year that IAHPC has presented the Institutional Award, as a way to recognize the commitment and support from leaders in institutions that join the IAHPC as Lifetime Members.
The award confers a USD$2,000 grant for one staff member, chosen by the institution, to attend a palliative care conference or educational program of their choice. An annual award winner is chosen at random from among current institutional members; Galilee joined IAHPC in in 2012.
Care began at home
The Galilee Palliative Care Unit was enacted thanks to His Eminence Nikolaos, Metropolitan Bishop of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki. Conceived as a home-care service free of financial barriersto those in need, Galilee required three years of planning to launch, beginning with targeting a patient group and interviewing them to determine their needs.

What Galilee now offers
- Integrated palliative care at home is provided by traveling teams comprising doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, priests and trained volunteers.
- Nurses operate an emergency telephone support service all day, every day.
- Thanks to collaboration fostered with the Medical School of the University of Athens and the University Nursing School, Galilee provides hands-on clinical experience to dozens of students.
- Galilee trains health and social workers in the basic principles of palliative care.
Outreach includes opening its doors to the public once a month, to introduce people to palliative care; guided tours for professionals and community members; and organized visits by school children.
Galilee also advocates for legislation concerning palliative care in Greece.
IAHPC resources & networking
‘IAHPC membership has provided GALILEE’s Interdisciplinary team easy access to articles and other resources necessary for the improvement of the quality of the services delivered,’ the Galilee team reported. ‘Also, it gave us the chance to create networks with other IAHPC members and to connect to the international palliative care community.’
