ORJEDEC receives IAHPC Institutional Member of the Month award . . .
A hospice and palliative care organization in Togo, West Africa, has won the IAHPC Institutional Member of the Month award. Pasteur Koffi Anoumou Tengue describes the work of ORJEDEC.
Organisation Jeunesse pour le Développement Communautaire (ORJEDEC) – in English, Youth Organization for Community Development – was created on 17 February 1997. Our original aim was to promote primary health care but since 2011 ORJEDEC has become a hospice and palliative care organization. We have three palliative care trainers, a trained pharmacist and also train community volunteers in palliative care. We work in hospitals and in patients’ homes.
ORJEDEC now has seven small health centers to welcome and accommodate patients throughout the country. We have supported more than 104 patients – children, women and men – of whom 30 are currently being cared for. They suffer from various serious diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and sickle cell disease.
ORJEDEC is a member of the Federation of Non-Governmental Organizations in Togo (FONGTO) and the coalition, ’Publish What You Pay’. Our partners include the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the African Palliative Care Association, Hospice Africa Uganda, Hospice Africa France, as well as the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care. ORJEDEC also works with sister organizations in the fight against non-communicable diseases and other serious diseases.
