Resources and Announcements
Each month, we publish a limited selection of items that may be of interest to our global readership. Contributions are welcomed but please observe the following:
- Content should describe opportunities to advance palliative care and improve knowledge, skills and networking, e.g. education and training, travel grants, access to online resources, etc.
- 150 words maximum.
- Content must be relevant to a global audience.
- Copy deadline: 21st of each month.
- Please submit your copy to the editor. We reserve the right to edit content.

IAHPC Traveling Scholarships to the 12th Asia Pacific Hospice Conference and the 5th International Public Health and Palliative Care Conference
The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) is pleased to announce it will provide:
- Twenty (20) scholarships to support the travel of palliative care workers to attend the 12th Asia Pacific Hospice Conference (APHC) 2017. The Congress will take place in Suntec City, Singapore on July 27-29, 2017, and,
- Ten (10) scholarships to support the travel of palliative care workers to attend the 5th International Public Health and Palliative Care Conference. The conference will take place in Ottawa Canada on September 17-20, 2017.
Deadline to apply for the 12th Asia Pacific Hospice Conference (APHC) is February 28, 2017. Results will be announced by early April.
Deadline for 5th International Public Health and Palliative Care conference is May 15, 2017. Results will be announced by early July.
Applicants from all disciplines are welcome. In order to apply for a traveling scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Have not received grants from IAHPC in the past 3 years
- Be current IAHPC members. If you wish to apply and are not an IAHPC member, you may join by clicking here.
Preference will be given to applicants:
- Living in Lower, Lower-Middle and Upper-Middle income categories as per the World Bank income classification data. See here.
- Applicants who have been IAHPC active members for two or more consecutive years.
- Actively working in palliative care.
- Graduated less than 10 years ago from specialty or medical school
- Have an accepted abstract for poster / oral presentation. Proof of acceptance of the poster will be required.
Winners of the scholarships can apply the scholarship funds to off-set the cost of their travel and accommodations.

This conference is organized by La Féderation Internationale de Soins Palliatifs and Palliative.ch, and co-sponsored by the World Health Organization.
Participants from Lower- and Middle-Income Countries will have the possibility to apply for financial support.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the modern hospice movement in the UK, St Christopher’s is proud to present the first of a series of five conferences designed to facilitate reflection on how key aspects of ‘Hospice’ service delivery have evolved over the past five decades.

Looking Back, Looking Forward: Marking 40 Years of Palliative Care – Edinburgh, Scotland – 27 October 2017
St. Columba's Hospice, Edinburgh, is organizing a special conference as part of a year-long programme of activity to mark 40 years since it welcomed its first patients. The conference will feature top international speakers who will give their views on the future of end of life care.
A cast of international speakers will include: Dr. Catherine Calderwood, Dr. Derek Doyle, Prof. Nathan Cherny, Prof. Philip Larkin, Prof. Brendan McCormack, and Prof. Allan Kellehear.

Volunteer for Hospices of Hope this summer and make a difference to the lives of some of the most forgotten children in Europe
Hospices of Hope is a UK registered charity whose mission is to improve the quality of life for patients in South East Europe suffering from a terminal or life-limiting illness. Every summer with our Romanian partner, Hospice Casa Sperantei, we run summer trips for Romanian children who have suffered illness or bereavement. These children struggle to receive the basics of life and our summer trips are a rare opportunity for them to relax and enjoy themselves.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our summer trips team, with a variety of ages (minimum 16), skills and interests to help us organise these trips and give the children a holiday to remember!

The trips are based in three different locations in Romania – the seaside, our children’s centre outside Bucharest and in our hospice in Brasov. Volunteers will need to speak fluent English and provide at least two suitable references (preferably one from a church). We ask volunteers to cover their transport and accommodation costs and to pay an additional amount to cover the cost of the children attending the summer trips.
