Several important things are happening at the international level.
First, we have received great news from the World Health Organization informing us that our status as a non-governmental organization in formal relations with the WHO has been extended for another three years. We will be working together very closely with WHO in the development and implementation of the World Health Assembly resolution on palliative care which was adopted last year. We are very pleased with this news and look forward to some exciting projects.
Last month, several board members attended the International Congress of the Indian Association for Palliative Care. Doctors Mhoira Leng, Julia Downing, Sushma Bhatnagar, Gayatri Palat, and the two of us, were all there. We had a board meeting and were able to meet in person. Many thanks to Dr. Palat for facilitating the logistics for the board meeting and congratulations to all the members of the organizing committee for an excellent congress!
This month is the fifty-eighth session of the commission on narcotic drugs (CND) in Vienna. IAHPC will be well represented by Lukas and Dr. Katherine Pettus, the IAHPC advocacy officer. We are very proud of the role that IAHPC has been able to play in raising awareness about access to medicines for legitimate needs. We are co-sponsoring a side event on Tuesday March 10 on the ATOME (Access to Opioid Medication in Europe) project presenting the report on the results of the project in Eastern European countries. Dr. Anne Merriman will present the situation in Africa and Professor Rosa Buitrago – a newly elected board member – will present about the advances in Panama. The policy section by Dr. Pettus in this edition of the newsletter includes more information about CND and the side event.
IAHPC is sponsoring a workshop early this month in La Paz, Bolivia on availability and rational use of opioid analgesics. Liliana will be there, facilitating the workshop in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization, the WHO office for the Americas. Your gift funds the operational costs of our online courses taught by globally recognized experts who volunteer their time and provide educational resources relevant to palliative care topics. It also supports scholarships that enable palliative care workers to attend educational events and congresses, and allows us to maintain Pallipedia, the free, live, online dictionary.
The goal of this pillar is to implement strategies, resources and tools that will improve the competencies of the global workforce for appropriate palliative care delivery. We have two programs under this pillar plus many other resources for our members.
Your gift enables us to build and strengthen the partnerships that accelerate global, regional, and national advocacy for palliative care. We advocate for its integration into primary health care under universal health coverage and effective access to essential palliative care medicines and packages for people of all ages. Your gift supports our work to prepare delegates and participate in technical consultation meetings of the relevant UN organizations.

Research
Your gift enables us to continue doing research that provides guidance and recommendations for action, based on responses from the global palliative care community. Such research includes our recent evaluation of the impact of euthanasia and assisted dying practices on palliative care workers and the use of essential medicines for palliative care. It also supports the costs of publications focused on research relevant to palliative care.
The goal of this pillar is to design and implement projects that lead to the integration of palliative care into health policies, resolutions, and key documents. Our studies help us provide guidance and recommendations, and take action based on the responses from the global palliative care community.
