Upcoming IAHPC Advanced Courses on Symptom Clusters
The IAHPC will soon announce registration for new additions to its series of advanced courses.
The courses will be focused on symptom clusters: gastrointestinal, respiratory, mental health, and a nursing panel on topics such as wound care and mouth care. The new courses will likely roll out between September and November.
As with the recently concluded Advanced Pain Assessment and Management Course, each symptom cluster will be discussed by experts in the field in three sessions held over three days. Participants can submit questions in advance about difficult clinical cases they have experienced and would like to see discussed.
If you do not already receive emails from IAHPC, and want to be sure to be notified of the upcoming courses, sign up to receive special announcements.
All courses are free to IAHPC members: one more reason to take advantage of 20% off all memberships until the end of July.
Save the date: October 14
Also, on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, October 14, 2023, IAHPC will host a Webinar featuring the Spanish and Latin American compassionate communities movement. This year's theme is compassionate communities.

World Drug Data of Use for Advocacy and Government Policies
As mentioned in Katherine Pettus' column in this issue, in June the UN Office of Drugs and Crime released its World Drug Report 2023. Pettus describes the report as "a tour de force of statistical analysis" showing trends in all aspects of the cultivation, manufacture, and policing of controlled substances" that can be used in national policymaking, guiding both advocacy and decisions about essential medicines, such as opioids.
The report is available to download online in any of the UN's usual languages The report is structured as two booklets that cover the following.
- Executive Summary (more than 90 key findings)
- Special Points of Interest (takeaways and policy implications)
- Contemporary Issues on Drugs (synthetics drugs and law enforcement challenges, regulating medical cannabis, other issues such as risk to the environment in the Amazon Basin and displaced populations)
- A new feature: Online Segment (trend and data analysis)
The "online segment" is a platform that allows key findings to be searched using filters by region, topic, market, and more. Each key finding contains insights presented through succinct messages and more than 300 data "visualizations," including interactive graphs, infographics and maps.
Pallium India Releases Nursing Courses
A significant milestone was achieved on May 13 when Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, Vice Chancellor of Kerala University of Health Sciences, launched Pallium India's palliative care nursing course for those with a diploma, BSc or MSc in nursing.
The four-month course is self-directed learning involving 33 modules on pain management, symptoms management, communications skills, and dementia. The entire course requires 50 to 60 hours, averaging 90 minutes to 2 hours per module, and the fee is ?2000 for nurses, and ?4000 for doctors.
The module aims to equip nursing students with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide compassionate and comprehensive palliative care to needy patients. It facilitates comprehensive learning of palliative care for BSc nursing students, helping to ensure that future nurses are well prepared to deliver comprehensive palliative care to patients in need.
Great Idea! When it needed volunteers, Hospice Egypt tried a new approach: recruit students from the medical field by signing a protocol of collaboration with two universities. The protocols were to achieve multiple goals, including: prepare future doctors and nurses for hospice care by giving students hands-on experience that adds to their credited curriculum hours, serve the thousands of patients in need of volunteer care, and spread information in Egypt about hospices generally.
