Volume 24, Number 7: July 2023

Dear Readers:

It is worth recapping some of the great membership benefits we are now offering:

We invite you to take advantage of our 20% discount in membership fees, announced in June, which runs until the end of July. If your membership is current, or you recently joined or renewed but wish to take advantage of this offer, go ahead and renew. Your renewal will extend your membership for the duration that matches your payment. If your membership has expired, this is a great opportunity to rejoin. If you have never been a member of the IAHPC, join us to unlock all of the benefits available to members of this global palliative care community!

APHN 2023 Conference scholarships

We are currently accepting IAHPC Scholarship applications for the 15th Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Conference in Incheon, Republic of Korea, from October 4-7, 2023. The deadline to apply is July 27, 2023. If you live in a country in the Asia Pacific region, we invite you to apply! Names of the successful applicants will be announced mid-August.

IAHPC Photo Contest

IAHPC's second photo contest is underway! It is a golden opportunity for you to showcase what palliative care looks like in your part of the world. The deadline to submit your photos is October 31, 2023. Visit the IAHPC website for more information, including the rules and instructions to apply. We look forward to seeing your photos!

Courses: advanced pain assessment & advocacy

Building on last year’s Comprehensive Pain Assessment and Management Course, in late June and early July we delivered the Advanced Pain Assessment and Management Course. Lukas and Dr. Ebtesam (Sammi) Ahmed, who spearheaded the course, discussed difficult clinical cases. Katherine Pettus joined the panel on the first day to present and discuss issues related to the global legal framework. If you wish to revisit the course or were unable to participate in the live sessions, you can watch the recording by using your membership number. The feedback from participants was very positive, and more courses are being developed. [See the News section.]

Some of our other recent courses that are as fresh as the day they were created include the 2020-2022 IAHPC Advocacy Course by Katherine Pettus and the 2022 Comprehensive Symptom Assessment and Management Course.

Books for members

As we mentioned in our June column, thanks to a gift from Dr. Eduardo Bruera and the Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation & Integrative Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center, new and renewing members can receive any of the books below and only pay shipping costs from our office in Texas. (Delivery in the US: $17 per book. Delivery elsewhere: $35 per book.) Note: It may take 4-6 weeks for delivery

If you are not a member or if your membership has expired, consider joining or renewing to take advantage of these opportunities.

This is vacation time for many of our readers, including those living in the Northern and Southern hemispheres; we hope that you enjoy the days off and we look forward to our continued collaboration.

Until next month,
