Members’ Impact

There's nothing as good as sharing skills and stories in person, as was done here during the hospice's last visit to Malawi. Photo supplied by Hospice of the North Coast. Used with permission.

Congratulations to IAHPC member Hospice of the North Coast and Nkhoma Mission Hospital for winning the 2021 Global Partnership Award presented by Global Partners in Care (GPIC) on March 7, 2022. This award recognizes the outstanding efforts of a relationship that has demonstrated the care values of a true partnership: commitment to building a strong relationship, partner collaboration, staff contribution and commitment, and community outreach and involvement.

The US Hospice of the North Coast is based in Carlsbad, California, while Nkhoma Mission is located in Malawi, 10,205 miles away (16,400 kilometers). Partners since 2015, “Hospice of the North Coast has shown what a tremendous impact one partnership can have in the delivery of palliative care,” said GPIC president Mark Murray. “The long-term commitment they have made to Nkhoma Mission Hospital has made a lasting effect on the patients and their families in their community who need palliative care.”

Dr. Sam Kabota, Clinical Superintendent/Elective Coordinator, at Nkhoma Mission Hospital, commented, “There’s an African proverb: if you want to go fast go alone, but if you want to go FAR, then go with others.”

The award was presented during the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s Annual Leadership and Advocacy Conference.

Yvonne Heung and Eduardo Bruera, along with David Hui, authored a review, Timely Palliative Care: Personalizing the Process of Referral in Cancers, in the February issue of Cancers. In this review, which is open access, they discuss the conceptual underpinnings, rationale, barriers, and facilitators for timely palliative care referral.

Naveen Salins, Sunitha M. Daniel, MR Rajagopal, and Sushma Bhatnagar were among nine co-authors of research article, Developing a Screening Tool for Serious Health-related Suffering for Low- and Middle-Income Countries – Phase-1: Domain Identification and Item Generation, published in the Indian Journal of Palliative Care. The report discusses the preliminary development of a tool for identifying SHS at the individual level that is suited to health care settings in India. Field testing of the tool is Phase 2.

James F. Cleary and Julia Downing, with IAHPC officers Liliana De Lima and Katherine I. Pettus, were among the co-authors of Advancing Global Palliative Care over Two Decades: Health System Integration, Access to Essential Medicines, and Pediatrics published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management. The article, which is open access, discusses the progress made in the integration of palliative care into public health systems, access to controlled medicines, and pediatric palliative care.
