A Deeper Dive into IAHPC Membership: Asia
By Genevieve Napier
IAHPC Programs Officer
In the past few months, we revealed the breakdown of your fellow IAHPC members by geographic region, age, and profession. Over the next few issues, we’ll be taking a deeper dive into each geographic region.
The region with the most members is Asia; it accounted for 27% of members as of March 31, 2021. In fact, there are members in 32 countries in Asia: the largest group is in India (36%), followed by the Philippines (10%), then China and Bangladesh (6% each). The pie chart below gives a more detailed breakdown.
Look for the country-by-country breakdown of Africa in our June issue; North and South America in our July issue, and Europe in our August issue.
Members’ Impact
Four of the six authors of “Top Ten Tips Palliative Clinicians Should Know About Evidence-Based Advocacy,” published online on April 30 by the Journal of Palliative Medicine, are IAHPC members. They are: William E. Rosa, PhD, MBE, ACHPN, FAANP, FAAN; IAHPC Advocacy Officer Katherine I. Pettus, PhD; IAHPC Executive Director Liliana De Lima, MHA; and IAHPC Chair of the Board Lukas Radbruch, MD. The other co-authors are Allison Silvers, MBA, and Stacie Sinclair, MPP.
The article lists “10 pragmatic tips that palliative specialists can use to advocate for policy changes that enhance PC access and equity at institutional, local, national, and global levels.”
The abstract states that: “Palliative specialists are uniquely positioned to merge their clinical expertise with empirical evidence to advocate for improved PC delivery. There is a vital feedback loop between advocacy and clinical practice that palliative specialists can leverage to influence key stakeholders and decision makers and bridge PC policy deficits. Sustained interdisciplinary partnerships are critical to evidence-based PC advocacy that addresses resource gaps, social injustice, and unmet and disparate needs. Although PC advocacy may appear optional or even frivolous at times, it is an essential skill for any practitioner working to improve care for seriously ill individuals and their families.”
The article’s DOI is 10.1089/jpm.2021.0182.
