IAHPC Traveling Scholar's Report

13th World Congress on Pain in Montreal, QC Canada on August 29-September 2, 2010

I am most grateful to the IAHPC for the 2010 Traveling Scholarship award that allowed me to attend the 13th International Congress on Pain in Montreal. This was an excellent opportunity for me to get an overview of a wide range of topics in the area of pain which will enhance my clinical skills. The sessions provided practical reviews of current research and therapies in these areas. The delegates were able to participate in both formal and informal discussions with international experts on pain management and pain research. We hope to incorporate these ideas into our practice back home. I especially liked the plenary sessions on “Advancing Pain and Palliative Care Globally: Challenges and Opportunities” by Dr. K. Foley and “The War on Cancer Pain: New Battles” by palliative care nurse J. Paice. The most relevant and interesting topical session for me was on palliative sedation presented by Drs. H. Muller-Busch, R. Payne and J. Cleary. I also was pleased to be able to share my poster on “cinema education” as a palliative care teaching tool with the rest of the delegates during the meeting.

I would not have been able to attend this Congress without the support of the IAHPC as well as that of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). More power to their good offices.
